By Sarla Donovan COMMUNITY concern over a shopping and entertainment complex in Church Bay has forced a rethink on how it will look. Spence Developments wants to build a supermarket and 111-space car park, four shops, a cafe and a 30-seat cinema at 139143 Marine Drive, behind the On the Spot store. The Church Bay Neighbourhood Association has expressed misgivings about whether the building would fit in to the semi-rural environment. Corrugated iron, timber or stone were suggested as alternatives to the proposed tilt-slab construction materials. Association secretary Pat Pritchett said they had been in touch with Spence Developments to give their feedback. She was pleased at the designs would now be revisited. “I hope they’re looking at not using tilt slab as part of that. It’s good to know they’ve listened to the community and I hope they continue to do so,” she said. •Turn to page 4

So they are doing everything in their power to get a tanker which can hold more water. The Little River brigade covers a big catchment and it needs the equipment to do the job. The city council has taken a modern tanker from the Little River brigade, saying it is needed elsewhere – Christchurch. The city council must have a short memory – there have been big fires in Little River over the last couple of years, and didn’t we have a major one on the Port Hills several months ago? Call for Beachville Rd clean-up By Sarla Donovan THE BEACHVILLE Rd esplanade is an unsightly mess, residents say and they want it cleaned up. Redcliffs Residents Association secretary Pat McIntosh wrote to city council infrastructure rebuild liaison manager Ross Herrett on October 13 about “unsightly” landscaping next to the new $4.6 million seawall. It follows an earlier email from the city council in June, when Mr Herrett said the landscaping work would be rectified by SCIRT in early spring. But the area remains overgrown and weed-ridden. “There is no sign of even routine maintenance being undertaken,” Dr McIntosh said. “What used to be a pleasant grassed area used for picnics and play is currently shin-high in weeds with bare patches in between and is quite useless and very unsightly.” Picnic tables removed from the area during the seawall construction were damaged beyond repair, Dr McIntosh said, and when she asked the city council for replacements, was told it was up to the Coastal Pathway

In Brief WHARF STRUCTURES TO GO Structures encroaching on public land along the Akaroa Wharf are to be removed. The Banks Peninsula Community Board decided on Monday that all structures which can practically be removed should be taken down. City council staff will now speak to Black Cat Cruises, which owns the structures, and report back to the board on November 13 with a time frame for removal. MUSEUM LAND TRANSFER Land at 33-35 London St is expected to be gifted to the Lyttelton Historical Museum Society tomorrow. Last month a hearing panel recommended the land be transferred to the society and the city council is expected to adopt the recommendation at its meeting on Thursday. The museum has been without a home since its Gladstone Quay premises were made uninhabitable after the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. BOAT WASH RECONNECTION The boat wash adjacent to the Akaroa Boat Compound should be reconnected now that Akaroa’s water quantity has been improved, say the Banks Peninsula Community Board. It has asked the city council to reinstate it and is waiting to hear back on when this is likely to happen.

New wastewater system plan for Diamond Harbour A NEW pressure wastewater system may be installed in Whero Ave and Marine Drive, Diamond Harbour. The gravity wastewater network in the area was badly damaged in the September 4, 2010, and February 22, 2011, earthquakes, and through root intrusion into the joints. The situation has caused blockages and overflows on to private property. And in some areas houses have been constructed over the wastewater pipes, meaning they cannot be accessed for repair. The city council is proposing to install a pressure wastewater system like the one recently installed in Charteris Bay. The individual tank and

pump system is located in an underground tank which transfers wastewater, under pressure, from individual properties to the city council’s pipes in the street. It is connected to an alarm panel attached to the outside of each property, which alerts city council staff if there is a problem with the tank. The only parts of the system that would be visible are the lid of the tank and the alarm panel. Feedback is being sought on the proposal until November 13. U-turn on ferry terminal bus stop plan By Sarla Donovan THE DIAMOND Harbour ferry terminal will retain two bus stops after a U-turn from the Lyttelton Port Company. But it’s not budging on a decision not to provide a dedicated pick-up/drop-off zone. The LPC has been under pressure from community groups over a move to reduce bus parking spaces Peter Davie from three to one and not provide a public drop-off zone, as part of its staff car park development on Jetty 2. LPC chief executive Peter Davie said yesterday he had “listened to the concerns expressed by the Diamond Harbour Community Association and the Banks Peninsula Community Board about the negative impact reducing the bus service to one stop would have on people using the ferry. We have decided to retain two bus stops so there is no change to the 28 bus service, while the 535 will pick up and drop off people wanting to catch the ferry from Norwich Quay.”

While they wouldn’t provide a dedicated pick-up/drop-off zone for private vehicles, LPC would “facilitate access” for people to drop off goods, had young children or who were physically impaired, Mr Davie said. “Regular users . . . can apply for a permit to enable them to be dropped off and picked up close to the ferry. People who are not regular users, but need close access to the ferry, can phone LPC security 24 hours a day, seven days a week to arrange entry. As a secondary

option people can contact Black Cat Cruises to facilitate access.” Banks Peninsula Community Board chairwoman Christine Wilson said the board was “delighted that LPC has revisited its plans.” Stairs onto the Oxford St overbridge are being re-installed, reducing the walking distance to the ferry. “The community has been asking us to re-install these stairs and we are pleased to deliver this. We will undertake this work while we construct

our staff car park for Waterfront House, LPC’s new operations and administration building. Akaroa toilets ‘disgraceful’ TOILETS AT the Akaroa Recreation Ground have been labelled a “disgrace.” Akaroa resident Laurice Bradford has written to the Banks Peninsula Community Board denouncing the current state of the toilets. “The pipe is leaking on the sink in the ladies so the floor is always wet and the doors don’t lock that well in the ladies and the disabled toilet. There is also no soap or paper towels.” Ms Bradford said the toilets were used by “a lot of travellers, and locals, and should be in better condition. “Freedom campers are washing dishes in the sinks, which is a health and safety issue.” She wants the city council to provide a tap, sink and bench on the outside of the building for campers to wash their dishes. Community board chairwoman Christine Wilson said the board had discussed the issue at their meeting on Monday. “We didn’t think a sink was a good idea. We want to encourage campers in need of facilities to go a campground.” However, the board has asked city council staff to look at fixing the problems and improving the maintenance of the toilet block.

News Firefighting capacity worry •From page 1 FENZ Christchurch metro area commander Dave Stackhouse has put forward a case for Little River to get a new or upgraded vehicle “as soon as possible,” Mr Irving said. There have been several serious fires in Little River over the past couple of years and Mr Irving said coming into the dry season it was a real concern they didn’t have the right equipment to fight fires. The Little River brigade covers a 60km radius from Seabridge Rd near Motukarara to the Hilltop Tavern above Akaroa. “(The case has) gone to Wellington Fleet Management,” said Mr Irving. “Unfortunately it’s been nearly three months now and there’s been no result.” The Banks Peninsula Community Board has now raised the issue with FENZ. Board member Tori Peden said they were expecting a briefing from them on the situation in December. Mrs Peden said both the brigade and local residents were worried about the limited transportable water, especially with the weather starting to heat up. Birdlings Flat resident Barb

We’ve had two fires at Birdlings Flat since we’ve been living there and once they take hold in that matagouri . . .” Little River Campground owner Marcus Puentener said that as a rural property owner with native bush, the prospect

of it going up in flames was a worry. “If anything, we need a larger truck, being in a rural area. Pedestrian safety to be improved with white pavers NEW TACTILE pavers designed to improve pedestrian safety in Akaroa will be white, except at the Rue Jolie intersection. Banks Peninsula Community Board chairwoman Christine Wilson said it was a difficult decision for the board, which had tried to find a compromise between community concerns over retaining heritage values in the township, and maximising pedestrian safety. City council staff had recommended the yellow pavers as having higher safety values. The Blind Foundation also advocates using yellow – for those with low vision yellow is recognised as a warning colour. However, heritage advocates argued the yellow tactile pavers would affect the look of the Akaroa historic area and pushed for white to be used. Rue Jolie will have yellow ones because its proximity to a zebra crossing meant white pavers could be confused with a bar of the crossing.

Long-serving MP still looking ‘I wanted to change the world. Make it a better place’ By Sarla Donovan RUTH DYSON turned 60 in August, but the political veteran shows no sign of slowing down. Three days a week she’s in Wellington, and though her stepson lives there and a stepdaughter up the coast in Paekakariki, there’s not much opportunity to see them or her five grandchildren – work doesn’t finish until 10pm. She says the time away from her Moncks Bay home is good for her and Martin, her “very tolerant” husband of 32 years. Their house was rebuilt after the February 22, 2011, earthquake and Martin looks after the vegetable gardens, chooks and beehive while she’s away. September’s election saw Ms Dyson increase her majority by more than 5000 votes in the Port Hills electorate she’s held for four terms. And this time around, she’s back in the corridors of power for the first time in nearly a decade, this time as the Government chief whip. Like Labour leader and now Prime Minister Jacinda Arden, Ms Dyson’s interest in politics came as a teenager, though she wasn’t from a political family. Catholic educated, she describes herself as an “army brat” who lived in different military camps around the country. She had to persuade her parents to vote Labour. “I won,” she says with a wry smile. “I’m sure they were National voters before me.” Growing up, she never lacked ambition. “When I first started school, I remember I was at a Catholic primary school and the teacher

And to her credit, she never told me that I couldn’t be the pope.” The appeal of politics was idealistic. “I wanted to change the world. Make it a better place. I was involved in anti-mining, antiapartheid, the peace movement, women’s movement – it was the 70s, you had to be. But I didn’t get involved in party politics until I lived on the West Coast in the 80s.” In the end, it was a toss-up between Labour and Values (which later became the Green Party) but with no other Values person on the

coast, she ended up joining the Labour Party in 1979. After working as a campaign organiser for Labour MP Kerry Burke in the 1981 and 1984 elections, a shift north to

Wellington followed, helping Fran Wilde with the Homosexual Law Reform Bill. Then, at the 1988 Labour Party conference at the Dunedin Town Hall, she defeated Jim Anderton to win the position of party president at the youthful age of 31 – a position she held for the next five years before being elected to Parliament in 1993 in the Lyttelton electorate which later became Banks Peninsula and then Port Hills. She’s now been there for 24 years, one of the longest-serving current MPs, and has held her electorate seat in all but one election (losing to National’s David Carter in 1996.) Being back in Government

after nine years on opposition benches is a “huge opportunity” she says. “Listening to Jacinda on the radio this morning makes me think we’re probably going to be working non-stop for the next three years, because there’s such a big list of things to do.” Ms Dyson concedes she wasn’t anticipating a return to Government three months ago. “If you had asked me then . . . I would have said we’d be spending another term in opposition, watching more destruction.” It’s 18 years since Helen Clark’s Labour Government prised National out of office and the issues facing the new coalition are “not dissimilar,” Ms Dyson says.

And Auckland . . . had sold off all their council housing properties. So there was huge pressure for social housing then, (but) it’s substantially worse now.” “I also think, especially here in Christchurch, mental health is in a much worse state. We’d had quite a period of stability, probably from when Jenny Shipley took over from Jim Bolger (in 1997). “Shipley and Helen Clark were on the same page in terms of mental health and were both pretty determined to depoliticise it. It was often called the ‘Cinderella’ of the health system – always the last thing to get done – so I think in 1999 mental health was in better shape, though the health system overall wasn’t. But now, the health system is really under resourced and for me, mental health is the really big issue.” Also not new is the way women politicians get treated. She reckons they still get judged differently to men. “The New Zealand Herald headline that had Jacinda putting a ‘curse’ on the All Blacks – would you have done that to Bill English? Maybe, but I don’t think so. She’s a woman and she’s young. That shouldn’t make a difference, we should be really proud of that but it’s seen as a negative thing by quite a few people.” Having said that, “any woman that goes into public office helps the next generation do it. Fran Wilde and Annette King are two of the women that really encouraged me to get involved in politics and they still do, they’re still two of my closest friends. a political operator, it was more ‘where’s the bathroom, where’s my office’ . . . but I’ve always been interested in how decisions are made and how to influence things, what really makes a difference. “I’ve learned a lot about the political process and how best to influence change. I had five years as president of the party so before I went into Parliament I thought I knew how the place ran, but I didn’t have a clue. You don’t know until you get in there.” “What keeps me there? I can get things done, I can change things for the better. That’s what keeps me there.” So does Ruth Dyson ever forget that she’s an MP? “At this time of the political cycle, no . . . we’ve just been away for the long weekend and – I should have worn a balaclava. I had people coming up to me in a restaurant on Stewart Island saying ‘what’s going to happen?’”

Problem pavers finally fixed By Sarla Donovan HOW LONG does it take to fix a bumpy footpath? Turns out, quite some time. But here’s the abbreviated version: In May this year, Sue Stewart (right) tripped on uneven pavers along the Akaroa waterfront, grazing her face. Not one to take such things lying down, she decided to go out with some spray paint and mark the area to help prevent others from falling and injuring themselves. That’s when Banks Peninsula city councillor and Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner got involved. He visited the site and assured Ms Stewart the city council was taking the matter “very seriously”. The problem pavers would be fixed by the end of June, he told Ms Stewart. Fast forward three months to September and the pavers were removed, but still not replaced. Cones and barriers surrounded the area. Cr Turner said it wasn’t a simple matter of just replacing the pavers. Apparently,

specialist contractors were needed to replace the pavers with a gravel, resin-based material, which would provide a safe surface around the trees and keep them healthy. But poor weather and rain meant the contractor had a backlog. Then last month, Ms Stewart again contacted Bay Harbour News. “The barriers are still here,” she said. “Nothing’s happened for months.” On October 25, Bay Harbour News asked Cr Turner when the repairs would be finished? On October 27, almost five months to the day since the saga started, Cr Turner responded: “I have been advised that the final part of the work is being done, and will be completed, today. I have asked a further question on the reason for the delay, and can provide this information as soon as I have an answer from the staff responsible for the project.” Ms Stewart is understandably pleased. She’s contemplating writing a poem about the whole affair. Watch this space.

Your Local Views Clarifying issues surrounding development in port Peter Davie, chief executive, Lyttelton Port of Christchurch, responds to the Soap Box article in the Bay Harbour News from Felix Dawson, Diamond Harbour Resident and Banks Peninsula Community Board Mt Herbert representative Felix Dawson confused several issues pertaining to Lyttelton Port in his October 4 Soapbox article. It is important that the right information is provided so people know the facts. Upgrade of Diamond Harbour Ferry Terminal We are upgrading the existing Diamond Harbour Ferry Terminal amenities. We’re doing this at the same time as constructing a staff car park adjacent to Waterfront House, LPC’s new operations and administration building. For some time the community has asked if we could re-install stairs off the Oxford St overbridge to provide direct access to the ferry. This will reduce the walking distance to the ferry and is included in the terminal upgrade.

We are working closely with Environment Canterbury to maintain the existing bus service and we will retain the dual bus stops. This will ensure there is no change for people using the 28 bus service to access the Diamond Harbour Ferry. There has never been a dedicated drop-off/ pick-up area at the wharf, and currently, people cannot drive directly to the ferry. However we are happy to provide access for people who are impaired, elderly, have young children or are dropping off goods. We will be communicating this to Diamond Harbour

Ferry users and the wider community. Reclamation of land LPC has applied for resource consent to extend the reclamation in Te Awaparahi Bay to 34ha. Ten hectares has already been reclaimed as part of the Lyttelton Port Recovery Plan, following the 2010/2011 earthquakes. The port requires the 34ha reclamation to provide the space needed to meet the South Island’s fast growing freight requirements. LPC has always communicated that, while the port does not need all 34ha immediately, it will within the next

10 to 15 years, and is obtaining the consents now to allow the extension of the reclamation without any future disruption. LPC has always said that the logs in front of Norwich Quay will be relocated to either Cashin Quay or the reclaimed area. For locals, the expansion of the reclamation is particularly beneficial. Moving Port operations east, away from Lyttelton’s residential area, will also free up the inner harbour for increased community access. Cruise ship berth and channel deepening consent Obtaining the channel deepening resource consent is a critical

component of the international cruise ship berth construction and this was communicated at the consent hearing. While the existing channel has sufficient depth to allow cruise vessels to reach the port, dredging is required around the new wharf to allow the ships to actually dock at the proposed cruise berth. We are preparing to mediate with both parties who appealed our consent on their concerns and consequently, at this point, we are unable to provide a time line of when the cruise berth will be completed. We are as disappointed as many are about this delay, particularly as the hearing panel decided “by a considerable margin” that our consent be granted. LPC actively does its best to ensure that any impact our operations have on the community and environment is minimised. I encourage anyone with concerns to contact us. •More local views, p17

Landscaper gifts garden to bridge club SUMNER BRIDGE Club has a brand new garden out front thanks to a local landscape designer. Erik Ellis said the club had approached him to come up with a new design as the old garden had become overgrown and messy. The Dryden St cottage now features box hedging planted in a pattern to show an ace of spades – the highest card in bridge – and the letters SBC. Club secretary Ally Mathias said the club was “extremely grateful” for Dr Ellis’ generosity. “He gave his landscaping design and planting expertise, at no charge,” she said. Dr Ellis said he hoped that with the garden’s strong structure and regular maintenance, it would look good for years to come. Box hedging plants can last up to 100 years and handle both dry and wet conditions, Dr Ellis said. The freshly planted plots had attracted great interest at the club’s recent spring tournament, with members and visitors showing appreciation for the design, Ms Mathias said. Sumner Bridge Club was started in 1968 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in September next year.

TRACK: Concerns have been raised about the safety of the walking track between Cass Bay and Corsair Bay.

Walking tracks a safety concern WET WEATHER and a lack of maintenance are combining to make Cass Bay walking tracks a potential danger. The Cass Bay reserves management committee is concerned about poor maintenance on the Head to Head walkway between Corsair and Cass Bay and Cass Bay to Pony Point. It said the tracks are well used by locals and visitors but heavy use and poor management are

causing slips in winter and in summer long grass is obscuring the tracks. Drains have been put in place but the majority are not correctly positioned or clogged, secretary Helen Braithwaite said in a letter to the Banks Peninsula Community Board. “As a result, in wet weather, the storm water runs down and under the paths and erodes them.” “Over the last 18 years, we

have had meetings with council staff, looking at solutions to this problem. However, there has been little action, and with each change of council staff, discussions start from the beginning again.” The committee said the Pony Point track is under the care of the Regional Parks team, however, the Corsair to Cass Bay section is with the Urban Parks team, which “seems to have no funding for ongoing mainte-

nance of the track.” They’ve written to the board asking that the Regional Parks team take responsibility for all of the tracks. “It would also be useful to have a counter on the Corsair Bay to Cass Bay track, to measure the number of people using the track in order to justify the maintenance load.” The board has asked city council staff for advice on whether this would be possible.

But that was the experience for one of the nine Sumner and Redcliffs senior citizens which Ferrymead Rotary took into the central city. Although they all live alone and some still drive, most hadn’t been into the city for a long time. They were collected by two Rotary members in a van lent to the club by the Kowhai Rest Home. Their first stop – the Botanic Gardens. They were given a guided tour around the gardens in the ‘Caterpillar’, complete with a driver commentary about the plants and their origins, and stops for closer inspection at the begonia and cacti houses. Several hadn’t been on the ‘Caterpillar’ before and some had never been to the Botanic Gardens.

SIGHTS: Sumner and Redcliffs senior citizens enjoyed a trip around the Botanic Gardens.

After a Rotary-shouted lunch in a city cafe, they cruised around the changing scene of the central city rebuild. They took in sights such as the Margaret Mahy playground, the Piano Centre, the Isaac Theatre Royal and the Transitional Cathedral. So much had changed since they had last been to town 10 years ago. As you might expect, they were astounded by what she saw. One woman said: “I might now even be able to find my way around the city again.” The group was most appreciative of the outing. One wrote to Ferrymead Rotary, saying it was “especially fun and a real learning experience to be taken around the Botanic Gardens on the Caterpillar with a very

knowledgeable driver”. Feedback like this has encouraged Ferrymead Rotary to make the outing an annual project. This was the first time since the February 22, 2011, earthquakes that the club has provided something specific for this age group. From Taylors Mistake to the Atlantic Isaac Giesen plans to row 4700km for suicide prevention JOURNEY:

By Andrew Alderson ATLANTIC ROWER Isaac Giesen grew up in Merivale but spent his summers at the Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving Club from the age of nine. While he longer lives in Christchurch, the born-and-bred Cantabrian still rates Taylors Mistake as the “best damn club in the whole damn land”. All going to plan, over Christmas the 25-year-old will be manning the oars of his rowing vessel somewhere between the Canary Islands and Antigua on a 4700km journey across the Atlantic Ocean to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. Giesen leaves on December 12 and hopes to complete the crossing in 60 days. He expects to drop 20-30kg from a 110kg race weight, but a mop of hair and free-range beard that has seen him called “Jesus” will stay. On Chritmas Day, Giesen will sling his rod overboard, hoping to reel in a catch he can fillet on a chopping board built into the port side gunwale of his vessel, Bonnie Lass. The plan is to enjoy sashimi, even if he’s stuck in one of the trade winds route’s infamous hurricanes. Lemon could be added as a marinade or, depending on how cavalier he feels, he might knock up a soup with tom yum paste, coconut powder and desalinated water. Whatever ends up on Giesen’s menu, it is for a cause close to his heart. He lost an aunt and two mates

to suicide in recent years. The objective is to complete the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge to raise $1 million in the name of mental health for the Bravehearts, Black Dog Institute and Victim Support charities. A sum of $13,862 has been secured so far under a campaign branded The Blue Rower. Giesen knows eating on the voyage is less about Michelinstar meals and more about chowing down enough energy for his stints on the oars. He cites the case of veteran long-distance rower Leven Brown – who’s his mentor – being forced to open a bag of potato chips by sitting on them after battling to the point of exhaustion through a hurricane. “Because I’m going solo, I can row or sleep as much as I want,” Giesen says. “But I might break the day into six four-hour slots of three hours on, one hour off. So I’ll need to eat so much food for fuel, then work out a sleep and rowing pattern around it.” Why go to such extremes? “The answer is ‘why not’?” he says. “I don’t have an answer to why my aunty and two mates did that. In fact, it’ll always be a demon question in the back of my mind, so while I’m still living

and breathing, why not live life to the full.” Giesen said he has never officially suffered depression, but that should not stop Kiwis talking about it. “I went through one spell where I’d wake up unhappy. I kept telling myself ‘tomorrow will be better’,” he said. “If I ever did have depression, the best way for me to deal with it would be through exercise, to control those inner thoughts. “I needed to break the silence. I don’t want to be that New Zealand man who won’t talk about his feelings.” Giesen believes the next generation can change the way New Zealanders think about mental health. “Some New Zealanders are still stuck in backward ways. Hopefully younger people can be open and talk about it like John Kirwan as an All Black. But who among the new generation will know him if they don’t follow rugby?” Giesen was once a surf lifesaver at Taylors Mistake, but never rowed competitively. He has been subjecting himself to three-hour rows on the ergometer to build his base fitness.

Brown told him his erg scores, with an average 2m 19s, split for each 500m, mean his fitness is “as good as it can get” for the task at hand. “I know I can do more, but I still expect to get broken out there. “I’m hoping it helps that I can read surf to know when to stroke and maximise the power of the waves. “I also completed my yacht masters course last year in the Canary Islands (including more than 5000 sailing hours) which helped me understand swells.” Planning has been key to building confidence for his expedition. Giesen has fixed and handheld GPS units on-board, alongside VHF units and charts to plot his daily position. He will eat dehydrated food, and has a water-maker and manual backup which can pump out 28 and two litres an hour respectively. Brown is helping Giesen with his weather navigation; a sound plan given he has rowed 30,000 nautical miles on various routes around the world. As a result, Giesen will get five different chart options a day and take the advice of 2001 trans-Atlantic race winners Kevin Biggar and

Jamie Fitzgerald. They got the weather in the morning and plotted incremental measures of achievement on their chart. He will also take the pair’s advice on oars. “They used wetsuit material for hand grips because it takes the moisture away and softens up the catch [of the blade in the water]. “It’s a bit squishy and better on your tendons. I’ve got an old wetsuit so I’ll probably cut that into strips.” Eight boats will contest the event’s solo class. Giesen’s is one of the oldest in the fleet but it’s “made with love” and “seamless finishings”. He can put out a parachute anchor if Armageddon pops up in the middle of nowhere. “My theory is ‘don’t touch it’,” Giesen says of the chute. “I’m about 10 per cent of the boat’s weight so I can manoeuvre it in the big surf.” Giesen finished a degree in viticulture and winemaking in 2015 and was working as a chartered skipper for Kiwi company MedSailors in Croatia on sailing holidays for 18-30-year-olds. Then he had an appetite for something new. “It was good fun, a lot of drinking, but by the end I’d had enough. I wanted to focus on this.” If he’s seeking inspiration, Kiwi Dame Naomi James embarked on a similar adventure 40 years ago, becoming the first woman to sail solo around the world via Cape Horn. She began her circumnavigation on a loaned 16m yacht just over two years after learning to sail. James suffered radio silence for 12875km heading south in the Atlantic, lost her kitten Boris overboard and was forced to stop over in Cape Town when her self-steering failed. Three months into the voyage, she realised she was miscalculating latitude with longitude on her distance chart. –NZ Herald

Records set in scorching heat at Boulder Bay Classic By Gordon Findlater THE PACE at Sunday’s Boulder Bay Classic was scorching hot, as records fell in both the men’s and women’s events. The men’s record was not just broken but completely smashed by race winner Oska Baynes. His time of 36m 13s over the 10.5km trail course was a whopping 3min quicker than the previous best time of 39m 13s set by Dallas Wichman in 2013. “I don’t think it’s beatable. The thing that was most amazing is that when he crossed the finish line he just looked like he had run 100m to go and have a cup of tea and piece of cake,” said event organiser Lisa Brignell.

In the women’s event Jean Kozyniak’s time of 45m 4s was good enough to shave 24sec off Liliana Braun’s record of 45m 28s, which she set last year. Braun finished second in Sunday’s race in a time of 45m 22s. Sunday’s conditions were perfect for racing with the overall pace among the top runners well under previous times. “It was a little bit overcast and cooler to start with and just got warmer and warmer as the day progressed,” said Brignell. David Fitch was the best of the Sumner Running Club members, finishing fifth overall in the men’s event and second in the 35-49 age category. The majority of regular Sumner runners expe-

rienced a day on the other side of the track as race marshals. The day was also a winner for the children with 50 prizes going to those who took part in the 1.2km run. With numbers on the track limited to 400, the popular event sold out entries three weeks prior to the race. The Mockers return to Lincoln for festival By Julia Evans SELWYN SOUNDS is going to be a sort of homecoming for The Mockers. Lead singer Andrew Fagan said it’s “quite humorous” thinking about playing in the district where the band’s career started. The day-long music festival at Lincoln Domain on March 3 follows this year’s inaugural event, which saw the Jordan Luck Band, Mi-Sex, Dragon and various Kiwi heavyweights play in front of a crowd of about 8000. “The Mockers had some of their first gigs at Lincoln University,” Fagan said, fondly remembering some of the “drunk agricultural students” during orientation weeks in the early 80s. The band, which was based in Wellington at the time, would pile onto the Interislander ferry with all kinds of musical equipment in tow then get onto a train bound for a night at Lincoln’s “big, huge uni hall”. “We did some really, really long sets. We used to play the same set three times in a row. No one noticed – they were just enjoying the live music and were probably too drunk.” But he said they wouldn’t be playing the same set three times

From playing in tiny Blenheim pubs to a massive, empty Gore hall, no town was left out. “It was even better when we started to become reasonably popular and people knew the material before we started playing,” he said. He’s looking forward to recreating that in Lincoln with The Mockers original 1985 line-up of Brett Adams, Geoff Hayden and Tim Wedde. “It’ll be great playing with a lot of other bands from that period,” he said. This year’s nine-act bill will include Jimmy Barnes, Stellar and The Feelers. “I can’t wait to see if Barnsey can still hold those long, high notes in Working Class Man.” In the meantime, Fagan, who is now based in Auckland, is working on material with his other band Fagan and the People, which he’ll be recording at the end of the year.
